Margaret Ritchie MP held a meeting in Hilltown on Friday 10th February to discuss the development of a Mournes Tourism Development Plan. Attending the meeting were community, business and farming representatives, council officials, NITB and Mourne Heritage Trust.
Speaking after the meeting the MP for South Down said;
In October 2011, I launched a Tourism Development Plan for St Patrick and the Downpatrick area. A number of projects from this plan are now underway and it has proven to be a practical vehicle in bring forward projects on the ground to improve visitor facilities and attractions. With the assistance of the local community and the various tourism stakeholders I now want to move ahead with a similar development plan for the Mournes.
This development plan will work in partnership with agencies such as NITB and the local Councils and will compliment the marketing and product development work being undertaken.
This development plan is about identifying needs in terms of particular projects. This may be the need for increase access and interpretation and visitor facilities at places of interest or bringing on board other agencies to highlight what is already on offer.
An example of this is the work I am currently involved with at Greencastle, on the need to increase opening hours, access, visitor facilities and interpretation at the Castle.
The ideas and thoughts of the community are vital to the development of this plan and I would ask anyone with a view on a particular project to contact me directly
