Ritchie welcomes confirmation of dedicated coronary care unit in New Downe Hospital

Margaret Ritchie, SDLP Assembly Member for South Down, has welcomed confirmation from the South Eastern Area Trust that the New Downe Hospital will have a dedicated coronary care unit.

Speaking at a public meeting in Ardview House, Ardglass Miss Ritchie said, “I am pleased the Trust has over turned their decision. Initial plans included a mixed ward to deal with patients with coronary problems. This plan was unsatisfactory as patients suffering with coronary problems need specialized and dedicated care.

I am delighted the new Downe Hospital situated on the Ardglass Road will now included a dedicated coronary care unit

I have been advised the 64 beds from the present Downe Hospital will be transferred to the New hospital. The Trust have decided to merge 5 short stay A & E beds with a medical ward. In totality this means, 9 beds will be dedicated specifically to coronary care.

I have no doubt these new plans will lead to a better health service provision for the people of South Down. We must continue to ensure through consistent representations and vigilance that existing services are protected, and continue our campaign for new additional services to be brought to the new hospital.”
