Ritchie welcomes review of Spa & Drumaness sewerage systems

SDLP Assembly member for South Down, Margaret Ritchie has welcomed the review of Spa and Drumaness sewage systems by Northern Ireland Water.

Miss Ritchie said, “The Drumaness area has long suffered from problems of sewer flooding due to an inadequate pumping station at the Drumaness Wastewater Treatment Works.

Heavy spells of this flooding occurred through out 2008, and most recently over the Easter weekend in 2009. I have raised the concerns of myself and my constituents in Drumaness directly with the Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Water.

Although improvement works have been carried out in the past to improve the inlet pumping station in Drumaness, it is clear that these interim measures are not providing a long term solution to the problem in Drumaness and the surrounding area.

I welcome the overall review of the Spa/Drumaness sewerage systems and treatment works, with a view to rectifying the situation permanently. I will continue to make representations to Northern Ireland Water concerning this matter in order for adequate and modern facilities to be made available to people of Drumaness and the surrounding area.”
